The de Zavala Middle School Band is comprised of three performing ensembles:
Concert Band
These ability based bands perform multiple concerts throughout the school year. Ms. Baker conducts the Honors Band and teaches Flute, Percussion, and Horn beginner classes. Mr. Parker conducts the Symphonic and Concert Bands and teaches Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Saxophone, and Low Brass beginner classes.
The HONORS BAND is the premiere performing group with preparation for the high school band program as a primary objective. Students will perform at multiple concerts throughout the school year and will also have the opportunity to perform at solo and ensemble contest and the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Evaluation. Instrumentation is limited to those who show advanced performance abilities and superior attitudes. Members are selected for this ensemble by audition.
Students will also have the opportunity audition for the All-City and All-Region bands provided they have met the eligibility requirements.
The SYMPHONIC BAND is a performing group in preparation for the DZ Varsity Band and High School Band programs as the primary objective. Students will perform at multiple concerts throughout the school year and will also have the opportunity to perform at solo and ensemble contest and the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Evaluation.The Non-Varsity Band is an advanced step up after Beginning Band.
The Concert Band is designed to emphasize continued development in areas such as technique, tone, and music literacy, as well as skills in ensemble balance, blend, and awareness. The Concert Band consists of 7th/8th grade students that have completed Beginning Band.
The CONCERT BAND is a performing group in preparation for the DZ Symphonic and Honors Bands as the primary objective. The Concert Band is a step up after Beginning Band. This group is designed to emphasize continued development in areas such as technique, tone, and music literacy while introducing the skills of ensemble balance, blend, and awareness. The Concert Band consists of 7th/8th grade students that have completed Beginning Band.
Students will also have the opportunity to perform at the solo and ensemble contests and compete at UIL provided they have met the eligibility requirements.
The HAWK BEGINNER BAND is divided into specialized classes for the purpose of teaching the basic fundamentals of playing an instrument. Classes include: Flute, Oboe/Bassoon, Clarinet/Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone/Euphonium/Tuba, and Percussion. This experience will give students the skills to progress into the Varsity and Non-Varsity Bands and will participate in the Winter & Spring Concerts.
Beginner Band is the way to join the de Zavala Middle School Band program! Contact Ms. Baker or Mr. Parker to be tested for an instrument and select BAND as your first choice on your schedule selection card. It's EASY!
